About Bikram Bathh - The Husband, Father & Son

The year 2010 was very special to me, this was the year when I landed in Canada as a young student with dreams as high as the Burj Khalifa to make a life in Canada. Coming from the (Punjab) province in India, where you start dreaming of going to Canada as young as 15, I didn’t really know much of the Canadian geography or culture. Came here with two bags and a $1000 dollars in my wallet, Canada felt very welcoming but the weather felt very harsh (didn’t have a winter jacket/boots).

“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family: Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”

Jane Howard

However, with each challenge, came a possibility of overcoming that challenge. The systems here were world class- very well organized and more important than that were the People here- be it my instructors in University, amazing friends in all the places I have worked/studied at and in general - People here felt very welcoming.

Having lived, worked and studied in cities like Vancouver, Fort McMurray & Kamloops within the first 3 years, I moved to my forever home “Edmonton” in 2013. I live here with my family - my wife (Monica), my newborn daughter (Gurbaani) and our fur babies - Zee, the golden retriever and Kittu, the black cat. My parents are here in Summers and enjoy winters back in India.

Canadian Dream

My Canadian dream incepted in 2015 when we bought our first property to live in and house hacked. We lived on the main floor of the property and rented the upstairs to a corporate rental company which covered about 80% of our housing expenses. Reading books like “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki early in 2012, I knew Real Estate was the vehicle of wealth for me. From 2016-2019, along with the help of my wife, we picked up another 9 properties in and around Edmonton.

From 2016-2019, along with the help of my wife, we picked up another 9 properties in and around Edmonton.

For 5 long years, we both worked our full time jobs in the day and fixed our properties in the evenings and weekends. I even had an occasional job as a videographer/editor making whatever extra money we could make/save. We rewarded ourselves with traveling to Europe, US and India during these 5 years. But that wasn’t the our only reward, we were building wealth passively. Our renters were paying our mortgages every month and our net worth was increasing every month- thanks to market appreciation and mortgage pay down.

The “Aha” moment

While life was in 5th Gear, there wasn’t much time to sit back and relax so in 2019 February, I quit my full-time job due to a burn-out from working too much in too little time. While my wife worked and we had some additional cash-flow coming in from our rental properties to support our lifestyle and expenses, I just quit working for a few months to see which direction I want to go next. After some due diligence, I decided to get a real estate license and sell homes for a living. Later that year, after getting licensed in Residential Real Estate , I sold 2 homes in my very first month- which was great. Just as I was getting into the gist of selling homes, I get a call from my family back in India that my dad is diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer. I left everything here to be with him and to our relief, dad was able to beat cancer with a surgery and some dietary changes. However, after staying in India for 3 months, I returned back to Canada in March 2020 to see the pandemic shutting down the world.

The workaholic in me hadn’t worked for over a year and I was hungry to go back to work but everything was shut down. I applied for a few jobs but with how things were in March - May 2020, there was absolutely no response. I realized around this time that being a self-employed individual is extremely tough, especially Mentally. You get busy when you least expect to and you get no work when you expect to be busy. After a few months of not really selling any homes and not really doing anything work related, I was hungry to learn and grow myself mentally. I read a lot, listened to countless podcasts, watched several YouTube channels that were focused around Personal Finance, Real Estate Investing, Stocks, Mindset and that paid off. While I was going though this personal growth journey, I shared snippets of it on my social media and people started reacting to it. So when things opened later in 2020, I started getting calls from people to help them buy homes or sell their homes. I started getting my first few successes in mid of 2020 and it has been a blessing ever since. After having helped over 24 families (Till Dec 2021), I am happy to say I found my “Aha” moment. This is what I enjoy.
